Tonight, we had a special show to show some love and appreciation for our friend, Art Hains.  We had a panel of people that love Art and are fighting with him during this challenging time.  In case you have been in a cave, or you are not from this area, Hall of Fame broadcaster, Art Hains, is currently battling some rare side effects of West Nile Virus. 

I want to thank my co-host, Art’s daughter, Kathleen Hains, for joining us, we were very grateful to have her in studio. Episode 260 October 12, 2022 – Courtney Frerichs, Dr. Brian Mahaffey – Champion Hall of Famers

On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame inducted St. Louis Cardinals physician, Dr. Brian Mahaffey and Olympic medalist Courtney Frerichs! We catch up with both inductees to chat about their careers and the path they took to accepting a Hall of Fame induction.  From high school Cross Country to the Olympic podium, Frerichs has ran her way into the hearts of so many with her perseverance and fortitude during competitions.  Dr. Mahaffey has impacted lives at every level from the Missouri State University Bears to the Springfield Cardinals, and now with Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals.  His diligence and caring spirit have athletes gravitating toward him and craving his knowledge and empathetic attitude.  Thank you to both of my guests for joining us, and for what you do in our world of sports!

Episode 259 October 5, 2022 – Darrell “Smitty” Smith – Champion In and Out of the Ring

Last night, Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame inducted Darrell “Smitty” Smith into their Hall of Fame. A successful boxer in his own right he had taken his skills along with two college degrees, law enforcement involvement, and military experience and created a mecca of mentoring with “Smitty’s Mid-West Boxing Gym & Youth Center”.  Opening the gym in 2012, Smitty has helped and coached over 1,500 kids using the sport of boxing as a powerful platform.  My guest has a heart of gold for kids and will do anything to help them succeed!  Thank you, Smitty, for what you do in our community and for what you do for our youth! Also, thank you to his son Israel for helping out with the interview!

Next week (Tuesday, October 4, 2022) the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame will induct six individuals and one Era of Excellence Award.  This year’s Era of Excellence award recipient is the Greenwood Laboratory School Football Program – Mullins Era. Coach Paul Mullins, along with quarterbacks Jim Ferguson, Steve Harman, and Alan Rosen from the Greenwood Football Program joined us as we talked about the secret of success of that program and how Coach Mullins and Coach Purvis built a culture around their program.  Young coaches and young athletes – listen up and take notes – this is a great episode on building a program!

We are thrilled to have the University of Missouri Men’s Basketball Coach Dennis Gates on tonight to speak about his vision for the Tigers basketball program.  We also will be replaying my interview from University of Kansas Men’s Basketball Coach Bill Self from last night’s Boys and Girls Club Steak and Steak Fundraiser.  Thank you to KOLR 10 and Brett Piper for the audio of the Coach Self interview. Springfield Rugby Hall of Famer and Drury University Rugby coach Bryan Bevel joined us as we went into fundamentals and strategies of the sport of Rugby. The physical training, the mentality and the 101 basics were all discussed.  My thanks to an expert guest for sharing his wealth of knowledge of Rugby.  What a great sport, best of luck to Coach Bevel and the Drury Rugby Panthers as they kick off their inaugural Rugby season!

The importance of professional development is so important to coaches, Coach Caira Dortch speaks to her involvement in supporting coaches and the Art of Coaching initiative.  We also catch up with Coach Katie Sowers. Coach Sowers was the first female NFL coach and has worked with the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.  She is currently a coach for the Ottawa University National Champion Flag Football team.

Surf’s up! I am totally “stoked” (surfer’s term) to have on this episode world champion, hall of famer surfer, Shaun Tomson! Shaun is a champion surfer, successful businessman, best-selling author, and motivational speaker. He made fame first by being one of the best surfers of all time. He has used his passion for surfing, not just catch the next wave, but to be the next wave, to encourage others to paddle toward their fears and self-doubt and find their purpose and power. His positive message is rippled through his speeches and workshops at corporations and universities worldwide. I was lucky enough to catch up with him – on dry land – and try and capture his message. Thank you to my co-host for the last three weeks as we took some time to explore the conversation of mental health in college athletes and what happens after their eligibility.   Heather Harman did a tremendous job bringing this series to the show.  It is a conversation that needs to continue and be revisited often.  It is so important to navigate the mental side of sports as well as the physical and sport specific sides. It is then that the athletes will reach their maximum potential. We appreciate the double perspective of our guest Nyla Milleson, as she explored the role of college coaches and athletic directors and how they can assist in this journey with the student-athlete. We appreciate the perspective of Heather Harman and Coach Milleson and their valuable points of view on this vital topic.

We continued our conversation with former Drury University standout women’s basketball player, Heather Harman, about the challenges of mental health for college athletes and beyond after eligibility is up.  In this episode, we brought in the perspective of the Regional Administrative Director of Mercy Orthopedics Sports Medicine, Jim Raynor, as he explored the role of an athletic trainer and how this role can possibly help with the transition, along with the mental side of rehabilitation.

Next week, we wrap up this series as Heather Harman continues to co-host and we explore how athletic directors can assist in the transition of competitive athletes moving to life after athletics.

It is here!  The first of two weekends of the Show Me Showdown High School Basketball State Champions!  Class 1, 2, and 3 this weekend and next weekend Class 4, 5, and 6.  In this episode we hosted Missouri State High School Activities Association Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhan and Assistant Executive Director Doug Fessler and previewed the upcoming Show-Me Showdown Basketball Championships.  Thank you to my guest for their information, but more importantly for their passion for providing valuable opportunities for students in Missouri.

Episode 242 March 2, 2022 – Denis Hogan, Spider Simpson – Handball Championships

The Missouri State Women’s Handball Team did it again by winning another women’s title at the national collegiate handball tournament, with Minnesota State-Mankato coming in second. In the men’s division, Minnesota State-Mankato came in first, Lake Forest second and Missouri State third. The combined trophy went to Minnesota State-Mankato by three points over Missouri State. In tonight’s episode we catch up with the president of the United States Handball Association, Denis Hogan about his vision for growing the sport and encouraging those of all ages to give this game a try. We also spoke with Angelo State University Handball Coach Dr. Warren “Spider” Simpson about his longevity with this sport and the value of cross-training in handball. His growth of the game and the financial support he has received is an impressive avenue for growing the sport. He recently received a one-million-dollar endowment named in his honor and appropriately called the “Dr. Warren Simpson Excellence Fund for Handball”. We close out the show with a little coach’s inspiration as we move into the winter sports championship season.
