In this episode, we welcome a special guest to our show, Frances Reimers, Founder and Owner of Firestarter. Frances is a personal brand expert, PR and Social Media Strategist, Radio Host, Author, Speaker and Educator. She is also the creative director and project lead, managing a team of professionals that help NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, NASCAR, and NCAA clients to expand their paid, earned, shared, and owned media opportunities.
We discussed the importance of positive branding and promotions of athletes, coaches, and programs. We then discussed the new NCAA legislation.
From NCAA.org -
The board approved the areas for modernizing name, image and likeness rules for student-athletes. When approved by the NCAA membership, these rules would allow:
Compensation for third-party endorsements related to athletics, without school or conference involvement.
Compensation for other student-athlete opportunities, such as social media, new businesses, and personal appearances, without institutional involvement or the use of trademarks/logos.
The board emphasized that at no point should a school pay student-athletes for name, image and likeness activities.
This is a HUGE game changer and we explored it with Frances Reimers as she discussed the implementation and offered some valuable guidance on building a brand for athletes and coaches, including social media dos and don’ts.
Next week, we will host a panel of college coaches about their viewpoints on this new legislation.
